If things have been ticking along quite nicely of late and you are quite comfortable about the way your career journey was heading, the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak might not have knocked you off kilter.

However, if you’ve recently been made redundant or lost your source of income from self-employment due to the coronavirus, you may be facing several challenges with work and finances. It is important to remember that these career roadblocks can ultimately lead to opportunities and success as it’s all about how you perceive the changes and which steps you take to move on from what, at the moment, might seem like the end of the road.

Nothing lasts forever

Staying still is as bad as going backwards, so although you might be reeling from the loss of a job you loved or worrying about how you're going to manage without your normal income stream, it's important to remember that nothing is set in stone.

We all suffer job setbacks at one time or another. Sadly many people are finding themselves in a similar situation at the moment, but this doesn’t mean that you should give up hope. It is simply a period of change that you’ll need to and, indeed, can get through.

Having the ability to dust yourself off and move forward is a must if you want to bounce back from a redundancy quickly. To help shake off any negative feelings that have been clouding your thoughts, set some goals and make a plan which focuses on how you are going to make the most of this change in situation.

Reach out

While you start to formulate your plan for your next steps, you’ll need the support and understanding of those closest to you.

Don’t be afraid to share your feelings and thoughts for the future with your nearest and dearest. After all, it’s a good bet they will be firmly in your corner while you start your journey down a new path. I decided to re-train as a coach after spending a great evening with one my closest friends as we formulated a business plan over several glasses of gin!

If you feel a little lost on the way, don't forget that career coaching can offer a valuable source of support, help focus your goals and fine-tune your plans for reaching them. This is an excellent way to gain insight and clarity from a third party who has the expertise, skills and knowledge to get you to where you want to be.

You do you

After the dust has settled, exploring new avenues can actually be quite a rewarding experience.

There’s never been a better time to revisit those dreams that you once had from a career perspective, so think about your motivations for working. Ask yourself, what makes you truly happy? What is your life’s purpose? What can you do to improve the world – even if just in a tiny way?

Don’t be afraid to take a closer look at careers that reward you in more ways than just financially.

Remember, a positive and optimistic attitude can help overcome pretty much anything, so put your best foot forward and take those steps towards your future career.
